Dear Laity View Families,
A reminder that schools are closed on Monday for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour the children who never returned home and the survivors of the residential school system in Canada. Last week, our staff facilitated age-appropriate conversations about this day and participated in some school-wide activities, such as our assembly last Friday. In addition, Tuesday is a non-instructional day, so there is no school for students. Please review the information below for some details about the upcoming week.
Mon., Sept. 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – Schools are closed on Monday. The Government of Canada designated September 30th a statutory holiday named National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in recognition of the lasting harm residential schools have had on Indigenous communities. We ask students, staff, and families to use this opportunity to reflect on the profound injustice of residential schools and ensure that the intergenerational trauma suffered by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit families is not forgotten.

Wed., Oct. 2: 10:20 – 10:35 am Intermediate Cross Country Training (Volker Park)
Thurs., Oct. 3: 10:20 – 10:35 am Primary Cross Country Training (Volker Park)

Sat., Oct. 5: World Teachers’ Day – On World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the critical role of teachers and paraprofessionals in transforming learners’ potential by ensuring they have the tools they need to take responsibility for themselves, for others, and for the planet. The world recognizes teachers as knowledge producers and reflective practitioners. A huge thank you to our amazing Laity View staff!
Photo Expression Orders: Photo orders placed by October 13th will be delivered to the school with no shipping charge. Orders placed after October 13th will be delivered with the retake photo orders, also with no shipping charge. Photo retakes are scheduled for October 23rd. After the last orders are delivered to our school, then any further photo orders are subject to shipping charges and are delivered to parents’ homes.
Personal Digital Devices: At Laity View Elementary, students are discouraged from bringing personal digital devices to school. This is because when students need to use technology as part of their learning, they will usually use the devices provided by the school. Our expectation is that cell phones are not used or turned on during the school day from 8:30 am to 2:20 pm. After school students should use their cell phones outside of the building. However, a staff member may grant a student permission to use a cell phone or other personal digital device for educational purposes during class time for purposes of inclusion and accessibility (e.g., digital literacy, communication, medical and health needs, and as defined within an individual education plan). Students who bring devices to school do so at their own risk. Parents wishing to contact their children during the school day can do so by calling our school phone at (604) 463-7108.
Student Verification Forms: Please check, sign, and date these important forms and have your childreturn the form to their teacher. It is imperative the school receives this form back for every student assoon as possible.
Parent Portal Consent Forms – Please ensure that you complete the 2024/2025 SD42 Consent Forms on the portal. Please read through each form in order to give permission or not provide permission for each child in your family at Laity View Elementary.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lawrance
