Dear Laity View Families,
Congratulations to our students and staff for the excellent job practicing our lockdown drill last week. As with fire drills and other safety programs, we want to familiarize students and staff with a procedure that they will be able to follow quickly, effectively, and safely. A reminder that kindergarten general registration opens at noon on the parent portal this Wednesday.

In this session you will learn about the registration process, available support structures in high school, and how to support a successful transition to high school.
Grade 8 Registration – All Grade 8 registration for the 2024-25 school year will be done online through the Parent Portal. The Grade 8 Transfer Period will open at 12:00 noon February 13th. Deadline for completing a request for the Grade 8 Transfer Period is February 24th. Families with children currently enrolled in a Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District elementary school should submit an Existing Student Transfer Request in the Grade 8 Transfer Period. Read the Grade 8 Transfer Period Information 2024/25 tab on the school district website for more details.
Middle Year Development Instrument, Grade 5 – The district has partnered with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at UBC to measure and promote children’s social and emotional development, health, well-being, and assets through the Middle Year Development Instrument (MDI). The MDI is a self-report questionnaire that asks children in middle childhood about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in school, at home, and in the community. The survey questions align with the BC Ministry of Education’s K-12 curriculum, which includes a focus on promoting children’s personal and social competencies. Grade 5 students are invited to complete the MDI during class time with their teachers between January 15th and March 15th.
Inclement Weather Procedures – The decision to close schools due to weather conditions is ultimately the responsibility of the Superintendent, who must balance the safety of students, staff, and parents with the need to provide learning. The decision is not taken lightly and is the result of a carefully thought-out process that is reviewed after each experience and refined if necessary. The decision to close schools is made by approximately 6:30 a.m. Details are:
- posted on the SD42 Twitter feed (@sd42news);
- posted on the SD42 Facebook feed (SD42Facebook);
- shared with News 1130, CKNW, and CBC 690 radio stations;
- posted on the SD42 Website (sd42.ca).
Please be sure that your children come to school dressed appropriately to go outside. At recess and lunch, we always go outside unless advised otherwise by the district.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lawrance
