Dear Laity View Families,
Last week was uncharacteristic with our multiple snow days! We hope everyone stayed safe and warm. While we anticipate some weekend rain help remove a lot of the snow on our schoolgrounds, there will still be a fair amount remaining which makes traffic in the drop off/pick up area as well as movement around the grounds difficult (especially for strollers). Please be patient and exercise caution, common sense, and good judgment during drop off and pick up. A reminder this Wednesday is a district non-instructional day, so there is no school for students. Please review the information below for some details about the upcoming week.
Tues., Jan. 23: Ski and Snowboard field trip – all day (for those students registered)
Fruit and Vegetable Delivery – cheese sticks

Mon., Jan. 29: 7:00 pm Learning Services Gr. 7 to 8 Virtual Parent Information Session

Wheelhouse Program Online Information Night, Jan. 25 and 29 at 7:00 pm – This program of choice located at Alouette Elementary is a classroom where Grade 6 and 7 students are both challenged and supported in becoming life-long learners and responsible citizens. Students who are currently in Grade 5 are eligible for Sept. 2024. Preregistration is required for the virtual information sessions.
Learning Services Gr. 7 to 8 Transition Virtual Parent Information Session, Mon., Jan 29th at 7:00 pm– Are you the parent of a Gr. 7 child with diverse needs starting high school next year? If your Gr. 7 child has an individualized education plan (IEP) and ministry designation, then you are invited to register for an online information session on Mon., Jan. 29th at 7pm. Pre-registration is required at this LINK. In this session you will learn about the registration process, available support structures in high school, and how to support a successful transition to high school.
Grade 8 Registration – All Grade 8 registration for the 2024-25 school year will be done online through the Parent Portal. The Grade 8 Transfer Period will open at 12:00 noon February 13th. Deadline for completing a request for the Grade 8 Transfer Period is February 24th. Families with children currently enrolled in a Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District elementary school should submit an Existing Student Transfer Request in the Grade 8 Transfer Period. Read the Grade 8 Transfer Period Information 2024/25 tab on the school district website for more details.
Middle Year Development Instrument, Grade 5 – The district has partnered with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at UBC to measure and promote children’s social and emotional development, health, well-being, and assets through the Middle Year Development Instrument (MDI). The MDI is a self-report questionnaire that asks children in middle childhood about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in school, at home, and in the community. The survey questions align with the BC Ministry of Education’s K-12 curriculum, which includes a focus on promoting children’s personal and social competencies. Grade 5 students are invited to complete the MDI during class time with their teachers between January 15th and March 15th.
Inclement Weather Procedures – The decision to close schools due to weather conditions is ultimately the responsibility of the Superintendent, who must balance the safety of students, staff, and parents with the need to provide learning. The decision is not taken lightly and is the result of a carefully thought-out process that is reviewed after each experience and refined if necessary. The decision to close schools is made by approximately 6:30 a.m. Details are:

- posted on the SD42 Facebook feed (SD42Facebook);
- shared with News 1130, CKNW, and CBC 690 radio stations;

Please be sure that your children come to school dressed appropriately to go outside. At recess and lunch, we always go outside unless advised otherwise by the district.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lawrance
