December 2nd Update to Families

December 1, 2024 By Lisa Lawrance

Dear Laity View Families,

A huge thank you to the PAC for our very first Family Glow Dance!  The night was bright with glow sticks, great music from the DJ, and plenty of fun and laughter.  The student energy and parent support made it a memorable evening.  Please review the information below for some details about the upcoming week.

December 2 – 6:  Schoolwide Roller Skating – option to bring your helmet and rollerblades

Wed., Dec. 4:  2:00 – 3:00 pm PAC Purdy’s Fundraiser PICK UP (front lobby)

Fri., Dec. 6:  12:25 pm PAC Hot Lunch – Hot Dogs (pre-order required)

Sun., Dec. 8:  Santa Breakfast (Gym) – 8:30am, 9:30, 10:30am sittings (tickets required)

Mon., Dec. 9:  7:00 pm PAC Meeting (CoLab)

December 10 – 13:  Scholastic Book Fair (Library) – more information to follow

Three Way Reporting Conferences, Dec. 12 (early dismissal at 11:30am) and Dec. 13 – You have the option to conference in person or online.  Please be sure to sign up for your desired allotted time of either online or in person conferences.  This is an important time where your child will be showing their learning for the term and setting goals for term 2.  As such, please try to find alternate arrangements for your other children.

Christmas Photos with Photo Expressions – There are two opportunities for family portraits before Christmas in the Photo Expressions Port Coquitlam studio in November and December, each of which raises money for our school.  When booking your portraits, enter our school name and the school earns $15!

Family Photos – Traditional portraits on white background.  You receive a free 8×10 portrait print with any paid order!

Christmas Portrait Event – This year it’s a country chic Christmas theme!  There is no free 8×10 portrait with this premium event.

We appreciate your support to raise money for our school!

Inclement Weather Procedures – The decision to close schools due to weather conditions is ultimately the responsibility of the Superintendent, who must balance the safety of students, staff, and parents with the need to provide learning.  The decision is not taken lightly and is the result of a carefully thought-out process that is reviewed after each experience and refined if necessary.  The decision to close schools is made by approximately 6:30 a.m.  Details are:

  • posted on the SD42 Twitter feed (@sd42news);
  • posted on the SD42 Facebook feed (SD42Facebook);
  • shared with News 1130, CKNW, and CBC 690 radio stations;

Water Testing Strategy for District Facilities – The school district is updating its water testing program by adjusting the number of drinking water sources in its facilities. This new water testing strategy, which has already been implemented in a number of neighbouring districts, will ensure a more streamlined testing schedule, limiting annual testing only to water sources that are being used. Each facility will also have at least one designated water dispensing station, with the goal of increasing this number over time.

Water sources designated for drinking are marked with a Drinking Water sticker, while those not included in the testing program are marked with a Not for Drinking sticker. A limited number of drinking water sources in the district require a 2-minute morning flush to ensure water quality; these are marked with a 2-Minute Morning Flush sticker. This morning flush is completed by staff as the facilities department prioritizes upgrades as a long-term solution.

Adjustments to designated drinking water locations may be made to meet any emerging needs and ensure easy access to safe drinking water across all our schools.

Staff will review this new labeling system with students at the beginning of each school year to ensure that all students, particularly younger ones, understand which water sources they can use for drinking.

For more information about the water testing program, visit the district website at https://bit.ly/40Uvcqy or the Ministry of Education and Child Care website at https://bit.ly/466CPuI.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lawrance
