June Newsletter

June 1, 2023 By Barb Mackinnon

Hello MRE Families,

We’d like to wish everyone a wonderful final month of the 2022-23 school year. Although there are just a few weeks left, there are lots of engaging learning opportunities and special events ahead. A big thank you, as always, to the staff, students, and families for making Maple Ridge Elementary such a great place to be.
In May, the grade seven students had a chance to visit their high schools and our new Kindergarteners came for their first visit, signalling milestones for both groups. There were many other MRE highlights, among them: Soccer Academy at Westview, butterflies in the classroom, obstacle courses at Wild Play, class photos, school based track and field, Star Wars Day, Body Science presentations, Volunteer Appreciation Tea, Cross Country Races, Hot Lunches, Jersey Day, and a Dress-Up Your Head Day. The first ever MRE PAC Bingo Night provided an evening of fun for adults and was a successful fundraiser.
With the help of the PAC, fellow staff, and students, Mrs. Keats is working tirelessly to organize the funding, organization and enactment of our long term goal to create an Outdoor Learning Area. It will be nestled among the new garden beds that will be tended by our students. We are awaiting some final touches and hope to be ready for a small opening ceremony on June 19th.
There is great excitement for the Carnival on June 16th which will be held during the school day. Parents are welcome to attend the event that is organized by a dedicated planning team from the PAC. A large number of volunteers is needed to run stations and help with food etc. The convenient link to sign up for all PAC volunteer opportunities is: https://mre.parentcouncil.net/admin/ . A list of volunteer opportunities is included below in the PAC section of this newsletter.
It’s with a bittersweet feeling that I let you know that I will be retiring at the end of the school year. While I am looking forward to spending more time with family, I know that I am giving up daily connections with wonderful people. You’ve brought me joy, and I couldn’t have chosen a better community for the last years of my career. I will miss you dearly and hold memories of MRE close forever.
I am thrilled that Mme Lendvoy, our current vice principal has been chosen as the new principal of MRE. Mme Lendvoy has the character and skills that bring out the best in our learners. Our new Vice Principal, Rachael Perry, is excited to be joining us in September. She comes to us from Pitt Meadows Elementary.
There will be one more newsletter later in June with information about report cards, school supplies and the first day back in September.
Happy days,
Barbara MacKinnon Chelsea Lendvoy
Principal Vice Principal

Staffing
These are the staffing changes known to date:
MRE’s new principal will be Mme Lendvoy who is taking over as Mrs. MacKinnon retires. We are so pleased about the smooth transition this will facilitate. Our new vice principal will be Mme Rachael Perry
Also retiring is Mrs. Wolstenholme who has been at MRE for many years.
Ms. Reitsma is moving to Eric Langton Elementary. We wish them both happiness in their new endeavours.
We are very pleased that Ms. Jody Degenova is officially joining the MRE EA staff and Mme Paula Cherfan is returning to MRE. We have missed Mme Cherfan while she was away.

Library News
It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the school year. Over the next few weeks, the MRE library will be collecting all outstanding overdue books and sending out charges for books which have been lost. All student books on loan are due back to the Library by June 2nd. After this date they will be considered late, and an overdue notice/bill will be sent home. If you could take a few minutes to check under your child’s bed, bookshelves, closets etc… for stray library books, it would be greatly appreciated.
It has been a pleasure working with your children and connecting them with great literature throughout the year. Have a wonderful summer and spend some time with a good book!
Mr. Bisset

Bike to School Week May 29 – June 2
Students are encouraged to use active transportation (walking, bikes, scooters, inline skates, etc.) to travel to and from school any day. BC’s Bike to School Week is happening now. We will be counting the number of students who participate each day. This has been a huge success in past years. Please consider participating and keep on riding any day!

• Bikes must be locked if they are left at school during the day
• Helmets are mandatory
• Once on the schoolground, students must walk their bikes/scooters

Grade 7 Leaving
Congratulations to the Grade 7 students for their successful years in elementary school. The Grade 7 Leaving Day will take place on Monday, June 26th during school hours. Family members of the Grade 7s are welcome to come to the gym to mingle with the students and take photos from 12:30-1:00 p.m. The ceremony goes from 1:00-1:30 p.m. and the Grade 7s finish the day with their own “After Party.”

CANDY & FREEZIE SALE
On Monday June 5th there will be a candy AND Freezie sale after school. French Immersion students will be fundraising for a Grade 7 trip to Quebec next year.

The sale will take place at the front entrance of the school and on the basketball court behind Mrs. Span and Mme Alliette’s classrooms.

Freezies will cost $1 and bags of candy will cost $2. Hope to see you there!

Arriving Late and Early Dismissals
Although it is not always possible, please aim to have students arrive by 8:25 a.m. and arrange appointments for your children outside of school hours so that learning is not interrupted.

Calendar for the Coming School Year
District calendars for the next 3 years are posted at: District School Calendars | Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District 42 (sd42.ca)

The calendar with dates specific to Maple Ridge Elementary is posted near the end of this newsletter.

Please note that all elementary schools in the district will be welcoming students for a 12:30 p.m. start on the first day of school on September 5th, 2023. This is a similar schedule that was used last year, and it allows schools to have important staff meetings in the morning before welcoming students in the afternoon.

June 29, 2023 Last day of school – dismissal is at noon
September 5, 2023 First day back – students attend 12:30 – 2:20 p.m.

Spring Cross Country Races
Congratulations to the students who competed in the District Intermediate Cross Country Run at Alouette Lake. Intermediate students challenged themselves to run 2 km on a trail that started on a beach and continued through trees and up and down hills. Primary students ran the trails at the Albion Fairgrounds. Long-distance running like this takes fitness, courage, stamina, and determination. They can be very proud of their efforts! Every runner finished strong!
Thank you to all the parents, caregivers and staff who transported, supervised, and cheered on the runners!

Carnival
We are SO excited for the Carnival that will take place on Friday, June 16th during the school day.
MRE families are invited to come out to the field to enjoy games, snacks, and activities.
There is a PAC Pizza hot lunch for students – preorder at: https://mre.parentcouncil.net/admin/.

Please note, food and concession items for students should be ordered ahead of time, but there will be some items for cash purchase. (There will be a limited number of hot dogs sold, but please do not rely on these for your child’s lunch.)
Attractions include a Five in One Boucy Castle, Ninja Challenge, Cotton Candy, Hot Dogs, Jousting, Face Painting and numerous snacks and other activities. The carnival runs from 8:45am-11:45am for primary students and 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. for intermediates. There will be a tug-o-war in the afternoon. Please join us if you can. Younger siblings are welcome to accompany you. If you can volunteer, even for an hour or two, please go to https://mre.parentcouncil.net/admin/ to sign up.

Lost and Found
We are pleased to see many more items with names on them. This is great! We deliver them right back to the owners. Despite this, the rack is very full.
It’s that time of year where remaining lost and found items will only be around for a short while longer. On the last day of school, all items are washed and sent to local charities. It’s not too late to retrieve a missing item… We’ve found lots of water bottles and dozens of sweaters. Please check the rack in the foyer.
We will continue to post photos of Lost and Found items on the MRE Facebook page and in the Friday Blast.

Student Absences
If your child will be away from school, please let the office know at by entering the absence on the portal, emailing mre_reception@sd42.ca or leaving a message at 604 467 5551.

Ready for the Warm Weather?
A friendly reminder to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle. Hats are a great idea (please write a name inside). As always, students need proper footwear for sports and active play.

Student Information
Please remember to let the school office know if any of your child’s information changes, e.g., home phone number, cell phone number, work phone number, address, emergency contact information, email address, etc. It is very important that the school has up-to-date information about your children in case of emergency. Thank you.

Are you Moving?

If you know that your child will not be attending MRE for the 2023-24 school year, please visit the school district website https://www.sd42.ca/student-registration/ for registration, transfer and withdrawl information.

If your child is planning to attend school outside of SD42 for the current school year, please complete our withdrawal form on the Parent Portal. Withdrawing through the Parent Portal helps us ensure student records are transferred to the new school in a timely manner. If you are withdrawing more than one child, complete a separate request for each child.
To complete a withdrawal form, log in to your Parent Portal account, click on the “Registration” tab, and under “New Requests” select the appropriate withdrawal period. Contact your child’s new school/school district to inquire about their registration process.

Please note: A withdrawal cannot be used to request a different school within SD42. If your child is currently attending an SD42 school and you would like to request a transfer to a different school within our district, you will need to complete a transfer request. See the transfer request process tab above for more information.

Transfers
Due to space limitations, most schools are only able to consider students within their catchment. Proof of address is required. Visit the district website at https://www.sd42.ca/student-registration/
for information and transfer deadlines.

Have your say in B.C.’s largest population health survey

Public Health has launched the third round of the SPEAK population health survey.
The survey is open to adults aged 18 years and older and asks about physical and mental health, as well as social and economic well-being. The results will help support programs and initiatives to improve the health of your community. Participate now
Regional health authorities, First Nations Health Authorities and the BC Centre for Disease Control are hoping people living in every part of British Columbia participate. This year, they are particularly interested in hearing from racialized communities, people living in rural parts of the province, people with children or young adults in their lives, men aged under the age of 35, people aged 75 and older, and people with lower incomes and education.
Please consider participating to help public health understand your community’s health and well-being needs. Once you participate, please share with your friends, loved ones, and network so their experiences are also captured. Please help support those who may need help with completing the survey. The SPEAK survey is available in English, French, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Punjabi, Farsi, Arabic, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean. Learn more about the survey bccdc.ca/SpeakSurvey
