LATE FRENCH IMMERSION INFORMATION NIGHT – January 31 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Golden Ears Elementary (activity room) 23124-118th Avenue, Maple Ridge The SD42 Late French Immersion Program is an excellent opportunity for students who want to learn a second language or are looking for a challenge. Students who are currently in Grade 5 are eligible to begin Late French Immersion in September 2019 at Golden Ears Elementary School. This two-year elementary program continues either at Maple Ridge Secondary School or Pitt Meadows Secondary. To learn more about Late French Immersion, attend our information meeting on January 31, 2019 at Golden Ears Elementary.

DONATIONS– We’d like to thank the family of Nixin Wilcott for their generous donation of dodgeballs to our PE department. The staff and students have truly enjoyed the new PE equipment.
CYBERSCHOOL INFORMATION NIGHT January 29 @ 7:00 pm , Alouette Elementary, 22155 Isaac Crescent
CyberSchool allows SD42 students in grades 6 and 7 to work at school three days a week, and from home (online) the other two days while still interacting with the class. Some benefits of this program include:

Development of independence and self-advocacy;

Use of technology to analyze and improve critical thinking skills;

Collaboration with peers both online and face to face;
-
Flexible scheduling – individualized daily agenda;
-
Use of technology to demonstrate learning.
CyberSchool students are also part of the school district 1-to-1 program in which each student is assigned an iPad for the school year. This option is open to all Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District students who will be going into grades 6 and 7 in September 2019.
WINTER ACTIVITIES– Grade 4/5 and6/7 winter activities have started. The upcoming days are:

KC KIDS’ CHOIR NEWS – Our January term practices began after school on Thursday January 17th. This year we will be preparing a concert to perform at the ACT with our good friend Rick Scott! (The concert is scheduled for 7 pm at the ACT on Wednesday, March 13th. A notice will go out on the portal this week to sign up.
GLOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR– In support of the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries, here in town, Kanaka Creek Kindergarten classes will be collecting winter accessories for the homeless adults in our community. Please help us make a difference and a gesture of kindness to the less fortunate of our community by donating new or gently used gloves, socks, scarves and hats (adult size). The project will run from Jan. 7th to Feb. 13th. Please send your donations to one of our 4 Kindergarten classrooms.
PINK SHIRTDAY –Pink Shirt Day will take place on February 27th, 2019. We have already passed the deadline for buying the district “Kindness Counts” shirts but you can buy shirts at your local London Drugs or just wear anything pink on the day. We’ll have some great activities and a bake sale going on that day. Let’s have a great time and always remember to be kind!!
GRADE 8 REGISTRATION PROCEDURES – Registration opens at 12 pm (noon) on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. All Grade 8 registrations are done through the Parent Portal at https://parents.sd42.ca. Each registration is time-stamped at the moment the registration form is opened to begin the online registration process.
DETERMINING CATCHMENT SCHOOL – The registration form will automatically populate with your child’s secondary catchment school based on the residential address on file with your child’s elementary school. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE SCHOOL HAS YOUR CORRECT ADDRESS.
You can also find your child’s secondary catchment school using the school locator tool at http://www.sd42.ca/school-locator/
If the address you register on the portal does not match what is on file with the school, proof of change of address will be required. Rental agreements are not accepted as proof of address.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION – Sibling Registrations begin January 21– Kindergarten registration for the 2019/20 school year is open to children who are 5 years old on or before December 31, 2019. For moreinformation: http://www.sd42.ca/kindergarten-registration/

JAN 7-31: c’usqunela Elementary Registration: Open to students who will be in kindergarten through to Grade 7 in September 2019 and want to register for this new school.

JAN 21-25: Sibling Registration. Open for siblings of students already attending the desired elementary school (currently in grades K-6).

FEB 1-4: Choice Registration.Open for all students who want to participate in any one of SD42’s unique program offerings (e.g. Environmental School, French Immersion, Montessori).

FEB 12-19:General Registration. General registration for English school.

FEB 27-June 26:Late Registration. This phase is for parents who may have missed previous registration

TRANSFER PHASE 1Transfer Phase 1 takes place between February 12, 2019 and April 4, 2019. To participate in Transfer Phase 1 for your current kindergarten to Grade 6 child for September 2019, obtain a Student Transfer Request Form from your child’s current SD42 school and submit the completed and signed form to your child’s current principal (this form is NOT required for approved transfers to c’usqunela Elementary). The best chance to transfer schools is during Transfer Phase 1.
