Classes will not be in session:

  • Thursday, February 14 as it is a PRO D day
  • Friday, February 15 as it is a school closure day.

GRADE 7 NEWS– the grade 7 students are hosting 2 events this month to raise funds for their leaving celebration in July:

  • Saturday, February 9 – Bottle Drive 9:00am to 3:00pm
  • Thursday, February 28 – Pizza hot lunch (students will eat first this day rather than play first)

FEBRUARY THEMES – We are covering a couple of themes in February.  As a part of our SEL focus and the “Be Kind” statement at Kanaka, we’ll be focusing on “Kindness Counts”.  Also, our district is focusing on February as our “Energy Challenge” month. Please see below some ideas that you can encourage your child/family to do in honour of these two themes:

WINTER ACTIVITIES– Grade 4/5 and6/7 winter activities are underway.  Please make sure you have given permission on the parent portal and paid for your child’s activity of choice.  Passes are available for pick up.

  • Grade 4/5 – Dates are February 7, 21
  • Grades 6/7 – Dates are February 8, and 22.

GLOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR– In support of the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries, here in town, Kanaka Creek Kindergarten classes will be collecting winter accessories for the homeless adults in our community.   Please help us make a difference and a gesture of kindness to the less fortunate of our community by donating new or gently used gloves, socks, scarves and hats (adult size). The project will run from Jan. 7th to Feb. 13th.  Please send your donations to one of our 4 Kindergarten classrooms.

PINK SHIRT DAY –takes place on February 27th, 2019.  If you ordered a Kindness Counts T-shirt, they will be delivered prior to this date.

GRADE 8 REGISTRATION PROCEDURES – Registration opens at 12 pm (noon) on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. All Grade 8 registrations are done through the Parent Portal at https://parents.sd42.ca. Each registration is time-stamped at the moment the registration form is opened to begin the online registration process.

DETERMINING CATCHMENT SCHOOL – The registration form will automatically populate with your child’s secondary catchment school based on the residential address on file with your child’s elementary school. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE SCHOOL HAS YOUR CORRECT ADDRESS.

  • If the address you register on the portal does not match what is on file with the school, proof of change of address will be required. Rental agreements are not accepted as proof of address.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION   –

  • FEB 12-19:General Registration. General registration for English school.
    • FEB 27-June 26:Late Registration. This phase is for parents who may have missed previous registration

TRANSFER PHASE 1Transfer Phase 1 takes place between February 12, 2019 and April 4, 2019. To participate in Transfer Phase 1 for your current kindergarten to Grade 6 child for September 2019, obtain a Student Transfer Request Form from your child’s current SD42 school and submit the completed and signed form to your child’s current principal (this form is NOT required for approved transfers to c’usqunela Elementary).    The best chance to transfer schools is during Transfer Phase 1.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT:

  1. In-catchment with siblings already attending catchment school (proof of residence required) or displaced catchment siblings on district list;
  2. In-catchment (proof of residence required);
  3. Out-of-catchment with siblings;
  4. In-catchment daycare;
  5. Out-of-catchment without siblings;
  6. Out-of-district with siblings (register at the District Education Office);
  7. Out-of-district without siblings.

PAC EVENTS:   – Our next Popcorn Day is on Wednesday February 6th.  We need more volunteers to make this event happen so if you are able to help out for 2 hours after the bell on Wednesday, we would greatly appreciate it!  If we don’t have enough volunteers by noon on Monday, we will cancel the event.
