Fall/Winter 2011
Grade 1’s began by using an excellent reading website starfall.com to practice reading, launching programs, adjusting volume, quitting and logging out.
They then learned to launch a program and how to use the tools related to that program. The program they have primarily been using is Kid Pix Deluxe 4. This program is both a word processing and graphics program They learn to use the draw, paint, and graphics to create different projects about themselves. Using Kid Pix they created pictures of themselves at Halloween, wrote poems and drew poppies for Remembrance Day.
They also used some programs that our district has purchased and made available online for use at home and school – Bailey’s Bookhouse – (where students can read, decode, rhyme and can print a card for different occasions), Millie’s Math house – ( where students can count and perform math operations) Trudy’s Time House and Sammy’s Science House.
You can access these at home by going to the school website http://kc.sd42.ca and click on the link in the bottom left column that says Student Resources.
In class students were learning about owls so they went to a website called kidwings to watch a video showing how owl pellets were formed and students were able to do a virtual dissection online. (http://www.kidwings.com/index.htm)
On one of our last days in the computer lab they worked with buddies to write letters to Santa and he sent us back letters immediately which they printed and took home. (emailsanta.com)
Grade 2’s have been learning about energy. We have used several different websites this term to discuss and learn about renewable and non renewable energy sources. Firstly, we learned about several different energy sources by going to the Managenergy website (http://www.learn-energy.net/education/kidscorner/en/u11/u11.htm).
Students were able to watch animations showing non renewable energy sources – like gas and how this is precipitating climate change. This led to the study of renewable energy sources like wind energy, solar energy, hydro energy, and energy from plants. Students watched the animations, and looked at real life photos and examples of these energy sources. Then using Kid Pix Deluxe 4, they were able to make detailed drawings of how these energy sources worked. They learned to draw, erase, label, add graphics, save and print their work. One other website we used was energyhog.org to learn more about saving energy.
Students then created their own energy super hero, sidekick and energy villain in Kid Pix.
We also used the website emailsanta.com to write a letter to Santa and received an email back from him immediately .
Grade 3’s have been using a variety of excellent websites (Nasa Kids’ Club, kidsastronomy.com, coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu, and enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/) to learn as much as they could about planets and space. Students worked in groups of 2 to study a planet. They needed to learn how large their planet was compared to earth and its diameter. They had to determine how far they were from earth and how long it would take to get there by space shuttle. They found out how much they would weigh on their planet. They discovered other facts like how many moons their planet had, how long a day and year were on their planet, and the temperature on their planet. They used Kid Pix Deluxe 4 to make detailed reports about their planets. They have labeled, proofread, edited, drawn, erased, added graphics, saved and printed their work. They printed these pages as a book.
We also used the website emailsanta.com to write a letter to Santa and received an email back from him immediately .
Grade 4’s
Students began a study of safe use of the internet. We used the passport to the internet on mnet.hypernet.ca. Students were given a login code and were then able to access the site. They chose an avatar which then moved through different places in a train station to learn about the different aspects of navigating the internet and how to use it safely. Their progress was recorded on a passport which they were able to print. They then began learning about maps and mapping. We used several excellent websites to learn about different aspects of mapping. We compared Google maps, Mapquest and Mapmachine from National Geographic. We used them to find our school and our homes. We used the zooming feature, street view, satellite, longitude and latitude and more. Students learned to find directions from and to different locations using these maps (from our school to home). We used Mapzone to learn about the compass rose, directions and grid references and played the treasure hunt game using these new skills.
Once students had a good understanding of maps and how they worked we began to use this information to make a website that would show what we had learned. We used a program called Iweb. Students pretended they were going on a trip across Canada – using google maps they discovered how far it was to drive to each capital city and some interesting things you might see there. Students learned to take screenshots using Safari and put these pictures into Iweb.
Winter/Spring
Grade 5
Students began a study of safe use of the internet. We used the passport to the internet on mnet.hypernet.ca. Students were given a login code and were then able to access the site. They chose an avatar which then moved through different places in a train station to learn about the different aspects of navigating the internet and how to use it safely. Their progress was recorded on a passport which they were able to print.
Students then went to the website allaboutexplorers.com. Here they completed the first assignment which was a treasure hunt. This is setup in such a way as to illustrate their need to use more than one website for their research. They are given 2 websites to answer 3 questions about their explorer. What soon becomes apparent is that they are vastly different and can’t be relied on. This began a discussion of which websites could be trusted. This reinforces an idea they were introduced to by the passport to the internet called the triangle theory. The meaning of which is – you need to find 3 websites that agree before you can trust the fact that you are using.
Now students began in earnest to find out information about a body system. We used the excellent website kidshealth.org to watch movies, and read articles and information about the different body systems. Students then began either alone or with a partner to research one system in particular.
They used a program called Garage Band to create a podcast with at least 8 segments, about their chosen body system. Garage Band is a program used to create music, edit music and record music and voice.
Students gathered research, wrote the information in their own words using Microsoft Word, and recorded their voice directly into the computer or into ipods which they then synced to the computer in Itunes and put into Garage Band. They then used premade loops (small music clips or sound effects ) of different genres and different instruments. They overlaid tracks to create music with several instruments. They learned to delete, lengthen, shorten and adjust volumes within these tracks. They learned to edit vocal tracks as well. In the end, they had full length podcasts about their particular body system.
Next students had classmates listen to their podcasts and suggest changes.
Grade 4
Students began a study of safe use of the internet. We used the passport to the internet on mnet.hypernet.ca. Students were given a login code and were then able to access the site. They chose an avatar which then moved through different places in a train station to learn about the different aspects of navigating the internet and how to use it safely. Their progress was recorded on a passport which they were able to print.
Students then began a study of explorers. Each student chose an explorer and then went to the website allaboutexplorers.com. Now students began in earnest to find out information about their chosen explorer.
Students used several other websites – like those found on cybersleuth-kids.com and the elizabethan-era.org.uk to look at a timeline of their explorers life. They then used the Powerpoint program to create 7 different slides telling about his explorations and life. They used and edited graphics in KidPix Deluxe 4. Then exported these to the desktop and used them either as backgrounds or graphics for their slides. They learned to edit text, add graphics, format backgrounds, add effects, transitions and record their voice into their presentations. They then burned them to cds and took them home.
Lastly we used Comic Life to create comics using it and Kid Pix to create our own comics around topics such as bullying. Students created graphics, exported them to the desktop, added speech bubbles and text and different layouts to create comics with a moral.
Grade 3
Students began a study of structures this term. We used the excellent website on pbs.org called building big. First we explored each of the interactive labs. Learning about the materials used to build big. The loads they can carry. The strongest shapes to build with and how to reinforce them and lastly the forces placed on these buildings. Students used the interactive website to learn which materials were stronger under which circumstances and how to use these to build a structure. They created 4 page books in Kid Pix Deluxe 4 illustrating and writing about what they learned.
Next we began to study inventions. We used the website inventionatplay.org to look at how to build a structure similar to the marble maze they build in the classroom. Then we began to study some of the top inventions of 2010 according to Time Magazine. Each period we would look at and talk about several inventions. The students would then write about and draw about the different aspects of that invention in Kid Pix. We printed and created books about inventions.
Lastly we used Comic Life to create comics using it and Kid Pix to create our own comics around topics such as bullying. Students created graphics, exported them to the desktop, added speech bubbles and text and different layouts to create comics with a moral.
Grade 2
Students began a study of different countries in the world. They were working on these in the classroom and library as well.
In the computer lab we were able to use several different websites to find out important information about their countries. We went to the school website and clicked on the student resources tab on the right hand side of the first page to access Trudy’s Time house. Here we were able to see the homes, clothing and customs of several different countries and where they are in the world.
Then we visited National Geographic’s Geospy activity to learn the different continents and their names in a fun game.
Next we used the children’s search engine – kids.yahoo.com to find our countries flag and drag it to the desktop. We then opened Kidpix Deluxe 4 to add the graphic and edit it – adding a title and our name to create a title page for our project. We also used this website to find and create a page with the country map and capital city.
In order to learn more about the culture and customs of their countries – we used the tab on the school website labeled a kids life in. Some students find text written on the websites challenging to read so they learned to highlight text in the website , right click it and choose start speaking from the speech menu to have the computer read the text to them. Students listened to or read the text and made a small 4 page book in Kid Pix Deluxe 4 with pages on food, sport, clothing and other customs in their country.
Lastly students were given a login name and access code for their class to the excellent website Kerpoof.com. They were able to create their own avatar and then create movies, pictures, and storybooks using the characters and backgrounds available in kerpoof. Students saved their creations into their backpacks which they can access both at home and at school.
Grade 1
Students began the term with a login name and access code for their class to the excellent website Kerpoof.com. They were able to create their own avatar and then create movies, pictures, and storybooks using the characters and backgrounds available in kerpoof. Students saved their creations into their backpacks which they can access both at home and at school.
In Spell a picture – students spell words and then are able to use these things to make a picture. Using the magic words like wind, snow and blizzard – their pictures become animated.
In Movie maker, students create movies with different characters. They make titles, music and other special effects. They can then animate their movies by selecting the different characters and choosing the actions they perform and the duration of the action and placing these on the timeline.
In storybook maker, students can create actual story books with different characters, backgrounds and use text boxes and speech bubbles to make their story. Students learn to add pages and save their stories into their backpacks to work on later at home or at school.
We also looked at the website mrmen.com in order to dovetail with what is being done in the classroom. Some students drew the mr men characters into movies and stories they made in kerpoof.com.
We went to the school website and clicked on the student resources tab on the right hand side of the first page to access several excellent websites such as Tumble Books and Mille’s Math house. I encourage you to use these at home.
Winter 2009/2010
Vancouver 2010 was our focus this term..
Students watched podcasts, highlight videos, and learned about the different sports and Canadian athletes of 2010. Check out the classes on the left to see some of the great podcasts created by the students.
