Good October morning/afternoon/evening!
I can’t believe it is October already! September flew by…!
October is bringing its own set of excitements! FSA’s and MDI processes are on the table for this month and November – information and letters went out in this regard, the literacy assessments are running, our Orange Shirt Day date will be determined as soon as we get our staff order ( 8-( ), we have our breakfast and lunch programs running, our multipurpose room is fully utilized with food programs, groups and will eventually be set up with stations for sensory stimulation.
Additional news items:
- Our Cottage is looking good – the new floor installation date may be sooner than December!
- PAC is selling freezies and our kids love it – rain or shine!
- Our GW community members are getting more and more aware that we have potentially 5 platforms of communication, and parents/guardians I have spoken to, appreciate the “real time” updates that are published on:
- Facebook and our
- Glenwood Website
- As far as Health and safety is concerned: we have addressed – and will keep addressing – the following concerns via District 42’s maintenance, Maple Ridge’s Parks and Recreation, the SCPA and Bylaws:
- The issue of dog poo on our fields – our community members and dog owners are implored to pick up after their dogs. Our field is consistently being used by our community, but we all need to take responsibility to keep this safe (!) for our students’ use. Your/any help in this regard will be appreciated.
- In an attempt to eliminate parking lot congestion, we have issued parking passes to staff. We need the parking lot open for staff, itinerant staff, visitors to the school and parents ONLY, between 8 am to 3 pm. Additional staff parking has been allocated “officially” too.
- I have asked the RCMP to be visible and assist on occasion during our peak times to help drivers make safer choices for all of us.
- Keeping traffic flowing is appreciated.
- Additionally, parking – i.e. switching off the engine and leaving your car – in the fire lanes / in the middle of the parking lot – is illegal. A quick drop off won’t hinder traffic flow.
- Our Health Nurse is here on October 11 to talk to Gr 6 students about the immunizations of à November 8
- Grade 3’s will be participating in Active Kids Noon Hour – it looks like a fun program! Ask your Grade 3 teacher about this!
- HUB was a fun program too. Our kids bicycled all over and the weather was amazing for this activity.
- Athletics:
- Our Terry Fox Run was a success. All the students participated, ran, and had a great time. The music definitely helped.
- Volleyball is starting up. Ms. Wadge is our coach! Practices Wednesdays – after school. Our first game is on the 10th @ Davie Jones; the 17th game @ MRE; the 24th game at Hammond.
- Community programs will start soon too – please, sign your child up!
- Reminder – there is no provision to bring a dog to school. Even if a dog was registered in BC as a therapy dog, there currently exists no district policy to permit therapy dogs in our schools; we are bound by the provisions and limitations as set out in law in the Guide Dog and Services Dog Act for BC (bclaws.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/15017.).
- Staff will be addressing our code of conduct – ROAR – regularly with their classes to ensure our students behave respectfully towards each other, and use appropriate language – especially during recess and lunch. There is nothing more difficult than getting a concern from a community member who has overheard our students’ language and topics of conversation on campus. We ask that you please help us in this regard. Our Code of Conduct is on our website too.
- Yoga – Jenn Allen from Safe and Caring Schools – may be doing yoga classes with some of our students (girls?) – more info to follow.
- With MyClass “Parent” accounts now open – find login assistance by emailing MyClass@sd42.ca
- And as far as field trips are concerned – it won’t be October unless we have Pumpkin Patch/Apple barn field trips!
- November 10 is a school-based Professional Development day. No classes on this day!
