Dear Families,
There seems to be a lot of media attention right now regarding schools and COVID. Please be assured that we are continuing to be diligent with the safety protocols around the school and are working hard to ensure c̓əsqənelə remains a safe and fun place for children.
Just a few items today to keep everyone organized and connected.
- Crazy Christmas Hair THIS Friday!!!! Our grade 6/7 student leaders would like to organize a fun event every week leading up to Christmas to help have a little fun within the classrooms and around the school. Their first plan is to invite all interested students to come to school THIS Friday with any style, form, or colour of crazy hair!
- Term One Reporting Update – This term, the current COVID situation prevents parents and staff from meeting in person at the school to discuss individual student progress. The District has asked schools to use Zoom as a temporary measure this term to ensure important conversations about how we can best work together to support student learning continue. Our school conferences will proceed on December 3rd and 4th using Zoom. These conferences will be10-15 minutes in length and teachers will send out classroom specific information.
- This year, in place of our regular gatherings (assemblies) we are creatively building our school community in other ways. One way is by have a regular school TV show called “c̓əsqəneləV.” We present this on the classroom projectors as a way to celebrate some of the great things going on around the building. We are also using this time to teach the kids about why our school community is special. Moving forward I’ll share some of this in some of our updates as well.
Did You Know????
- Our school name (c̓əsqənelə) is from the local Halkomelem language which is spoken by Kwantlen First Nation. Our school is located on the shared, traditional, and unceded territory of the Kwantlen and Katzie First Nations.
- Our school name means “Where the Golden Eagle Gathers” because there were once many Eagle nests located along the hillside where our school now sits.
- Our school name is not capitalized because there are no capital letters in Halkomelem
Sincerely,
Mr. Wheatley
