How it started?
Pink shirt day started in a small town in Nova Scotia where a grade 9 boy was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. His friends noticed that he was being bullied for wearing pink so they gathered up a bunch of other boys to also wear pink to protest and to stand up for their friend. Pink shirt day has been happening for 12 years to continue this protest in bullying.
Thoughts from kids in the community:
How can we help to stop bullying?
- “Be nicer to each other” – Bella
Why do you think anti-bullying day is important?
- “It’s important because we need to be aware that bullying is unkind and harmful.” – Kiki
WWYD if you were there when the guy was being bullied for wearing pink?
- “Stand up for him.” – Delina (PMSS)
We the students of PME have been showing our support of anti-bullying in many ways. We want to support the other kids at our school, just like the other kids did in Nova Scotia. We want to spread kindness!
We at PME stand together in support of anti-bullying. PME grade 6 and 7 students showing their support of anti-bullying by wearing their pink shirts.
Posted Community Board
Mme Nielsen’s class made a community board inspired by the book Posted by John David Anderson. Words can be weapons as well as gifts. Most importantly words can help spread change. Some of the post-it made us laugh and smile, which made us happy. We like the positive notes. It was cool to stop and read them. Although it was sometimes hard to find time in the day to stop and read them without getting in trouble. LOL.

PME Kindness Tree
Kindness grows at PME. We wrote about experiences where we were kind to others or when people were kind to us. At first it was hard to think of examples because we weren’t certain if it was an act of kindness. After asking our teachers it was easy to think of tons of examples. It shows us how kind we are as a community. Other Random Acts of Kindness can be found at https://www.randomactsofkindness.org.

PME’s Kindness Poster Demonstration
This was our chance at PME to spread kindness to our community. In fact, since it was difficult for some of the younger kids to participate, many of the older students made their posters with their little buddies. When we went out to Harris Rd to spread kindness, you could feel how excited everyone was. So many cars honked the whole way down the street.

The Blog’s Squad View:
We had a lot of fun this week. The kindness poster demonstration was a lot of fun because we got to yell and get cars to honk to show their support. We got to put smiles on peoples’ faces. The cars driving by really seemed into it.
We really liked wearing pink shirts and everyone seemed really happy. Pink is a nice and calming colour. This week didn’t seem very different from other weeks because normally our school is good about not bullying others. However, we did experience people going out of their way to spread more kindness. We think we should always be kind to one another and not just for one week
