Season in Review
Last year, our boys competitive team made it to the final and our girls made it to the 3rd place game, resulting in a 2nd and 3rd place finish, respectively. It has been another stellar basketball season this year. Proudly wearing their new jerseys (thank you PAC!), the Panther girls and boys teams again dominated the competition, both achieving 1st place in their leagues, earning a spate of home playoff games as a result. Waiting in the wings are two promising recreation-level teams, chomping at the bit to enter the competitive leagues next year. PME is blessed to have such a wealth of talented athletes. Future championship teams must first pass through Panther territory, if they can survive . . .
Competitive Basketball
And, it is official: our number 1 boys and girls competitive teams play their second playoff games at home next week. Last week the teams defeated Yennadon and Alexander Robinson. Both will face Albion squads next week. Monday is the boys’ game. Tuesday is the girls’ game (the information provided in the schedule handed out at the beginning of the season suggesting that this game will be played at Westview is now old and inaccurate – this WILL be a home game). Both are scheduled for the usual 3:00/3:10 start time. The results of these games will determine the teams’ participation in either the 3rd place game or the 1st place game, both held at Westview Secondary School. In other words, win or lose, both teams play again at Westview for either 1st or 3rd place overall. Deja vu: we are exactly where we were last year at this time. The boys play their Westview game on Wednesday, March 11th, and the girls play on Thursday, March 12th. The boys’ Westview games are scheduled as follows: 3:15 for the 3rd place game and 4:30 for the 1st place game. At the time of writing, information for the girls games is still forthcoming, but should mirror the boys,’ except their championship games are played on Thursday. Girls players who are participating in the ski trip to Grouse Mountain on the Thursday must be prepared to leave the mountain early in order to make it to the game on time.
Lunchtime practices may be organized for both teams on their game days, even if only to shoot some hoops. No morning practices have been scheduled.
Recreation Basketball
The boys recreation season was a short one and ended in the middle of February. The team is very talented and will add to next years’ competitive squad. The girls recreation season ended abruptly and unexpectedly February 17th. The game scheduled for the following week had been played earlier in the month to accommodate Albion, so no game was scheduled the week of February 23rd. Our game scheduled for March 1st was cancelled by the other school due to their misreading of the schedule, and, despite best efforts, could not be rescheduled. The void left in the schedule was quickly swallowed up by the needs of the girls competitive team. There has been discussion about holding an exhibition game after Spring Break with this recreation team (it is only tentative). Too, there has been discussion of continuing the girls’ program after Spring Break until Track and Field season takes off in early May, with a possible after-school practice once a week, or, perhaps, practices at lunch. It has been a real treat coaching this very young and enthusiastic squad, and their energy is what motivates us to consider continuing the program for a little bit longer. Details to follow.
Celebrations for our season in the form of a pizza party at lunch will happen post-Spring Break, likely in the week of April 6th. There will be two combined celebrations, either competitive and recreation teams together or boys’ and girls’ teams together, with a fun inter-squad game for each grouping.
