The district is offering a trophy and $350 for a prize to the school who saves the most energy and promotes energy conservation over the month of February. Over a week at Kanaka Creek, we do Math Trivia Monday, Tupperware Tuesday, Water Bottle Wednesday, Don\u2019t Throw It Out Thursday, Free the Plugs Friday, and Garbage Free Fridays. There are many activities that each class is taking part in and fun things are going on around the school throughout the month. Please help us win this challenge by packing your child\u2019s lunches in reusable containers, encouraging them to reuse ziploc bags, and promoting energy conscious choices at home. Although this challenge is only on for the month of February, we want to continue to practice these good habits in the future. The project will run from Jan. 7th\u00a0 to Feb. 13th.\u00a0Please send your donations to one of our 4 Kindergarten classrooms.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><strong><u>PINK SHIRT <\/u><\/strong><\/span><strong><u>DAY &#8211;<\/u><\/strong>takes place on February 27th, 2019.\u00a0 If you ordered a Kindness Counts T-shirt, they will most likely be delivered next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>BE KIND, BE FAIR<\/u><\/strong>&#8211; February, we are spending the month talking about being kind and fair to each other as we celebrate Valentine\u2019s day and Pink Shirt Day.\u00a0 The school will be writing positive messages to each other and displaying these around the school.\u00a0 Further, Mr. Raible and many staff members are highlighting books that focus on being kind and helping one another.\u00a0 Feel free to continue this theme in your nightly reading times with your students.\u00a0 Here are some great books recommended by our teachers:\u00a0 <u>The Giving Tree<\/u>\u00a0(by Shel Silverstein),\u00a0<u>Because Brian Hugged His Mother<\/u>\u00a0(by David Rice), and\u00a0<u>Sam and the Lucky Money<\/u>\u00a0(by Karen Chinn).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>PALS<\/u><\/strong>\u2013 (Parents as Literacy Supporters) will take place in the library on February 22 from 3:15-4:15. .\u00a0 If you have a child who is 3 or 4 years old and would like to attend, please call the school.\u00a0 (Let your friends know too!)<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>READY, SET, LEARN <\/u><\/strong>\u2013 February 27, 5:30-7 pm at Harry Hooge Elementary.\u00a0 This is a FREE early learning program that welcomes children ages 3 and 4 to SD42 and helps them get ready for success in school.\u00a0 The program offers special activities, story-time and crafts.\u00a0 Families also receive a package that includes a children\u2019s book and a parent kit with tips for supporting a child\u2019s learning and development.\u00a0 Registration is required at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sd42.ca\/rsl-registration\">www.sd42.ca\/rsl-registration<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>PAC EVENTS:<\/u><\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0\u2013Next PAC Meeting \u2013 February 13<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Popcorn Day \u2013 February<\/strong><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Our popcorn day was Wednesday February 6.\u00a0 Thank you very much to all the parents who stepped in as volunteers to ensure this event wasn\u2019t cancelled. We rely on volunteers to be able to continue with popcorn day and hot lunches.\u00a0 You can pre-pay now for our March Popcorn day and the remainder of the year&#8217;s Popcorn Days by accessing the online payment system at the bottom of this email.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please note<\/strong>: Online pre-payment for Popcorn Day fundraisers will close 2 days prior (4pm on Monday) so that we can tally orders and ensure our teachers are notified in advance of all pre-payments. This will help the event run more smoothly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fundraisers<\/strong><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Global Coffee &#8211; We are running the Global Coffee fundraiser again due to requests from our parents! If you can&#8217;t make it to the school for pick up please arrange with a friend or have your child come and pick up for you. We do not have storage at the school.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hot Lunch<\/strong><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>This month our Grade 7 leaving committee will be hosting a hot lunch for the school.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Events <\/strong><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>None in the month of February.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION \u00a0<\/u><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 If you know someone with a child that was born in 2014, they need to register for Kindergarten.\u00a0 Any one who does not live in catchment or have a daycare with address in catchment will need toregister right at noon on February 12 if they want a chance at attending Kanaka.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FEB 12-19:<\/strong><strong><em>General Registration<\/em><\/strong>. General registration for English school.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FEB 27-June 26:<\/strong><strong><em>Late Registration<\/em><\/strong>. This phase is for parents who may have missed previous registration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>TRANSFER PHASE 1<\/u><\/strong>Transfer Phase 1 takes place between February 12, 2019 and April 4, 2019. To participate in Transfer Phase 1 for your current kindergarten to Grade 6 child for September 2019, obtain a Student Transfer Request Form from your child\u2019s current SD42 school and submit the completed and signed form to your child\u2019s current principal <strong>(this form is NOT required for approved transfers to c\u2019usqunela Elementary). <\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The best chance to transfer schools is during Transfer Phase 1.<\/p>\n<p>ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In-catchment with siblings already attending catchment school (proof of residence required) or displaced catchment siblings on district list;<\/li>\n<li>In-catchment (proof of residence required);<\/li>\n<li>Out-of-catchment with siblings;<\/li>\n<li>In-catchment daycare;<\/li>\n<li>Out-of-catchment without siblings;<\/li>\n<li>Out-of-district with siblings (register at the District Education Office);<\/li>\n<li>Out-of-district without siblings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>FAMILY DAY AT THE ACT<\/strong>\u2013 on Monday, February 18 between 11am and 3pm there will be <strong>FREE<\/strong>Family Day activities from the ACT Arts Program and more!\u00a0 Celebrate Family Day with a trip to \u201cJacky\u2019s Village\u201d, featuring music, dance and storytelling from Cameroon and Guinea.\u00a0Entertainers will delight all ages in a participatory performance featuring a variety of traditional African instruments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>APRIL BREAK CAMPS<\/strong>:\u00a0 It seems hard to think about spring with the recent deep freeze, but it will be here before we know it.\u00a0 Here are some local April break camp ideas!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Albion FC Soccer<\/strong>Camps April 1-5 or April 8-12.
