    1. After School Programs at GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY:<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Please watch for an orange brochure in your child\u2019s backpack informing you of the Fall selection of After School\u00a0 Programs. Programs are offered three times per year, Fall, Winter and Spring running for either 4-6 weeks, our first set will start the beginning of October. Registration information can be found in the brochure, if your child requires extra support in the classroom please contact Drea Owen prior to registration to ensure the program will be a good fit. \u00a0Children benefit from participating in after school programs both academically and socially, creating opportunities to build on traditional learning outcomes but also through new friendships and experiences. Our After School Programs offer subsidies for any family who requires assistance by contacting Drea Owen at 604-346-9815 or at drea_owen@sd42.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n

      1. HUB Cycling will be running a free cycling course for families in Maple Ridge on September 30th.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        “HUB Cycling is running a FREE cycling\u00a0safety course\u00a0for Maple Ridge students and their\u00a0families on September 30th. This course\u00a0includes on-bike skills training and a neighbourhood road ride. Taught by certified cycling instructors, families will\u00a0learn road safety skills and build confidence to ride together.           1. NEWS ABOUT THE REDESIGNED CURRICULUM:<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            How has the curriculum been redesigned & how does this benefit student learning?<\/em><\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            The BC curriculum has been redesigned to support the changing world students are entering. The redesigned curriculum is student-centered and flexible, maintains a focus on literacy and math skills, and includes Aboriginal perspectives.<\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            So how and what will your child be learning? Each month in our school newsletter we will highlight a key feature of the redesigned curriculum and share stories about how this feature is being implemented in your child\u2019s classroom. We will also tell you about why these skills and abilities will help your child succeed.<\/p>\n

            1. NEWS ABOUT CLASS PLACEMENTS:<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              The much-anticipated class placements have taken place and the children are settling into their new classrooms nicely.<\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

              The process of organizing classes is a complex one.\u00a0 The staff have spent many hours and have made all the decisions with thought and care.\u00a0 The following are some of the criteria we follow when making decisions:<\/p>\n

              • Individual learning styles, strengths and needs,<\/li>\n
              • Social and personal characteristics<\/li>\n
              • Balance of boys and girls<\/li>\n
              • Ministry of Education class size and compositions requirements<\/li>\n
              • Peer relationships<\/li>\n
              • Enrolment changes<\/li>\n
              • Parent input<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                 <\/p>\n

                We are confident in the decisions made this year and are excited to move forward with our new learning communities.\u00a0 While social groupings are considered, new groupings allow children to have a wider circle of friends.<\/p>\n

                 <\/p>\n

                Resiliency is a skill built by experiences, and we understand that some children may feel disappointment. Acknowledge their feelings and help them to move forward in a positive way by encouraging them.<\/p>\n

                 <\/p>\n

                If you have any concerns about your child\u2019s placement, please speak with your child\u2019s teacher about your child\u2019s strengths, needs and interests.<\/p>\n
