{"id":3195,"date":"2026-03-12T15:04:24","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elementary.sd42.ca\/alouette\/?p=3195"},"modified":"2026-03-12T15:04:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:04:24","slug":"maple-ridge-students-spread-kindness-during-parade-to-local-retirement-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elementary.sd42.ca\/alouette\/maple-ridge-students-spread-kindness-during-parade-to-local-retirement-homes\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Ridge students spread kindness during parade to local retirement homes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3197\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress1.blob.core.windows.net\/alouette\/2026\/03\/2026-Alouette-Kindness-Parade-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students at Alouette Elementary turned lessons about kindness into action on Pink Shirt Day by walking through their neighbourhood to share positive messages and sweet treats with seniors living nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to two retirement homes in our community, up the street,\u201d said principal Jennifer Gallop. \u201cOur goal was to help students understand the impact their actions can have, and to give them an opportunity to spread joy within our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zOZw2wZw3xw?si=kz8F4hwC8Kvh_dBU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>About 520 students participated in the school\u2019s first-ever kindness parade to Chartwell Willow Retirement Community and Venvi Sunwood Retirement Living.<\/p>\n<p>Alouette students made colourful cards and posters with kind messages for the residents. Each class created at least two cards \u2013 one for each retirement community \u2013 while students at Maple Ridge Secondary helped by baking 200 cookies as gifts for the seniors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20335 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sd42.ca\/assets\/media\/Alouette-Kindness-Parade-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the weeks leading up to the parade on Feb. 25, students spent time learning about kindness, inclusion, and how their actions \u2013 positive or negative \u2013 can affect others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project was a meaningful way for our students to put those lessons into practice by spreading kindness within our community,\u201d explained Gallop.<\/p>\n<p>Grade 3 student Stella said her class read several books during the month of February about what it means to be kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learned that being kind comes back to you,\u201d Stella said. \u201cIf you do something kind, you\u2019re going to get something kind done to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the walk, students wore pink shirts and held up posters with kind messages.
