{"id":3305,"date":"2024-11-13T15:29:26","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T23:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elementary.sd42.ca\/albion\/?p=3305"},"modified":"2024-11-13T15:29:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T23:29:26","slug":"maple-ridge-students-celebrate-diwali-through-song-and-dance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elementary.sd42.ca\/albion\/maple-ridge-students-celebrate-diwali-through-song-and-dance\/","title":{"rendered":"Maple Ridge students celebrate Diwali through song and dance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/21TGkVHRoPE?si=O2I9z7qEpo_WDLPE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Students at Albion Elementary and Harry Hooge Elementary celebrated Diwali with presentations and performances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted our students to have an opportunity to celebrate Diwali and be proud of their culture,\u201d said Kana Wiens, English language learners (ELL) teacher at Albion Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>Wiens and Grade 4\/5 teacher Terry Jung organized Albion\u2019s school-wide assembly on Nov. 1, 2024. It took two weeks to put it all together with 11 students participating in grades 3 to 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt like this was a good way to not only show the students who celebrate Diwali, but to show all students that it\u2019s important to celebrate cultural diversity,\u201d Wiens explained.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly began with a presentation explaining what Diwali is and how it\u2019s celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did the longest line there was [&#8230;] about the first day of Diwali and summing up what Diwali is,\u201d said Grade 5 student Dhyan. \u201cIt\u2019s called the festival of lights because we put down divas and\u2026 it\u2019s like a guiding lamp for Bhagwan (God) to come in and stay in our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grade 4 student Yazhini also spoke at the assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiwali represents&#8230; light over darkness and good over evil,\u201d she explained. \u201cMy favourite part about Diwali is spending time with family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the presentation, Grade 3 student Karan and Grade 5 student Roop played the harmonium and tabla. The assembly wrapped up with two energetic dance performances, showcasing Bollywood and bhangra dance forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey practiced really hard for this assembly [and] I\u2019m so proud of them,\u201d said Wiens. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to stand up in front of the whole school and to dance and to perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harry Hooge Elementary also held a school-wide assembly to celebrate Diwali. There were two lively dance performances \u2013 one by primary students and the other by intermediate students.
